Questions to ask a Potential Employer

Securing an interview is a big step toward getting a job and talking with a potential employer is an exciting opportunity.  Interviews can also be nerve-wracking, and the best bet is to be prepared (see Questions You May Be Asked During an Interview).  At the end of an interview, a potential employer will often ask a candidate if they have any questions.  Taking this opportunity will help you learn more about the potential employer and demonstrate you are prepared, thoughtful and engaged.

Before the interview, create a list of questions to ask the potential employer.  Plan to ask three questions as long as there is time to do so, but have a list with at least five questions to ask. Inevitably, some questions will be answered during the interview so you will want enough questions to fall back on.  Further, if the employer asks if you have any additional questions, a safe response is “No, you have answered them all.” This indicates you had questions to ask but they were addressed during the interview.

Keep in mind that an employer should not feel they are being interrogated or you are wasting their time.  Listen to the interviewer’s answers and ask thoughtful follow-up questions, if appropriate.  Use the opportunity to highlight relevant experience not previously mentioned. Take advantage of the time for a less-formal exchange to demonstrate your social skills and knowledge of the company.

Can you tell me more about the day-to-day responsibilities of this position?

What are the challenges of this position?

What are important qualities to excel at this position and in the company?

What do you like best about working here?

Can you tell me why the person who had this position left?

How would you describe the company or office culture?

Where do you see this position and this company in 3 years?

Do you offer opportunities for professional training or continuing education?

Is there anything else I can provide to help you make your decision?

What is the next step in the hiring process?

Interviews offer candidates an opportunity to learn if the job and employer are a good fit. Think of this part of an interview as an opportunity to turn the tables and learn more about a potential employer.  Being prepared to ask good questions and demonstrate the research and preparation you have done will go a long way with helping you ace your interview!
